What If Your Child Could Finally Break Through?
How strengthening cognitive skills unlocked progress his family hadn’t seen before
“He can do mental math now.”
That’s what she told me—right before giving me the biggest hug.
We were at our local homeschool conference, a space that once shaped my own family’s learning journey and now gives me the chance to reconnect with so many families walking a similar path. This year, more than 600 families attended, and for the fourth year in a row, we were there too, connecting with our local Arrowsmith Program community.
This mom was sharing an update about her elementary-aged son, who started part-time with us in the fall. They’ve been consistent, doing the work, and making steady progress in the executive function areas he’s been training.
But the most meaningful changes aren’t just the progress we’re tracking.
With that big hug, she told me her son can now do mental math—something he had never been able to do before.
That’s the kind of change that matters. The kind that builds confidence and independence in ways that ripple outward.
I see this pattern again and again. When families move beyond just understanding their child’s challenges and take action to strengthen the underlying cognitive skills, things begin to shift—often in ways they didn’t expect.
And that’s what matters most.
As a parent of four university students and a high schooler, I know how strong cognitive tools are invaluable in today’s complex world.
They expand what’s possible.
Sometimes, they even lead to the kind of hug that says more than words ever could—
like this one from my youngest son.
